About the project
Pioneering Sustainable Maritime Research
The UAntwerp Solar Boat Team is a team of bachelors and master’s students from the University of Antwerp. Every year, we work on the design and construction of a boat powered by solar energy.
With this solar boat, we participate in international races against other universities and professionals. A competitive environment ensures that we explore new limits and learn to use green energy as efficiently as possible.
Last year, we upgraded our solar boat with autonomous capabilities to compete in the AI class of the prestigious Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. Following a year of intensive innovation including a fully electronic steer-by-wire system, AI-powered object detection, and intelligent pathfinding, we achieved first place by winning all 3 disciplines.

Open source
Open source: Innovation by Collaboration
At the UAntwerp Solar Boat Team, open source plays a crucial role. The open source model promotes the free exchange of ideas and accelerates technological progress through collaboration. This allows teams to optimize their performance and gain valuable knowledge. Not only is the race against the each other is fascinating, but also how the open source culture stimulates innovation and advances sustainable maritime practices. Together, we build a greener future where knowledge sharing is the key to success.
We are currently implementing a platform to share all our work. Already interested? Contact us at: solarboatantwerp@gmail.com
